Had a fight with dad over GPU's and RAM.

I failed to convince my dad to get a GeForce 8800GTS 640MB last night for the family computer. I was going to use my own money too, even if I didn't have a job (i'm 18, going to college, whoo!). I was sad for the whole night, but I was perplexed on how he based his 'no' on. Its on how the computer works. This is how he thinks RAM and GPU's work:The computer has 2 GB of RAM, and a decent AMD Athlon processor. It also has a 128MB integrated GPU. He says that in order for the GPU to work, the Graphics Processor must use 128 MB of memory from the 2GB of RAM, not from its own dedicated 128MB of memory. He feared that getting a 640MB GPU would require the usage of 640MB of memory from the 2GB of RAM on the computer, that getting a GPU with more memory would result in more memory from the 2Gigs eaten by graphical processing instead of central processing. I tried to explain to him that the 2 GB of RAM are dedicated to Central Processing only! NOT graphical processing, and that the 128MB of memory the GPU needs are all in the Graphics card itself. It does NOT eat away memory from the 2 GB of RAM, but from its own dedicated memory form the GPU. Who's right?Had a fight with dad over GPU's and RAM.
You are. Although integrated GPU's do take memory from the RAM. But that is only intergrated cards.Had a fight with dad over GPU's and RAM.
You should have hit him! lol
You are right but your dady won the battle anyway.lol.This is why I will not ask for money from my parents.I get a job and I'm going to buy my next pc from my own money.I'm only 19 years old, only with oneyear bigger than you.
We have an older computer that has a GPU running from a PCI or AGP (forgot). He said that it works the same way.
You are right, only integrated graphic cards eat RAM memory to work.
Thanks all for the replies :) . The integrated GPU's taking memory from the RAM, I didn't know about. But the GPU using a PCIe slot, using its own memory? He said that it too uses memory from the RAM. So i'm going to tell it too him today.
You are right but your dady won the battle anyway.lol.This is why I will not ask for money from my parents.I get a job and I'm going to buy my next pc from my own money.I'm only 19 years old, only with oneyear bigger than you.
lol, i'm 18 and i'm already enthused, which already makes me a computer geek. There are some 13 year olds out there who have already built their own pc's. :

I built my first comp at 11 but i fryed the HDD static.. But luckily i a spare on hand :)The specs of my first compIntel pentium 3 @ 1.3 gighrtz2x 128mb's of ram cheapo motherboardNvidia mx2 64mb of vram and a 125 watt psu I played quake 3 on it!
Intergrated uses the system RAM. A GPU has its own dedicated RAM. So youre dad is right and hes wrong.
my brother built his first pc when he was like 8 or 9. I think it ran 95 and another one ran dos.

Yea just dig through the W.E.B. and have your father read how video cards use there own memory. Companies, like Dell, make a boat load of cash off of misinformed consumers.
your dads right about about intergrated cards eating ram but if you go buy a pci xpress card it won't take any ram up
Your 18 and you were sad you couldn't buy a gpu? What has the world come to?
why would you put a good video card on a family computer?8600GTS would do just fine ._.
why would you put a good video card on a family computer?8600GTS would do just fine ._.
Whats the difference? Is he supposed to have a family PC and a Gaming PC? A family PC can be a gaming PC.
cause when you say family pc it kind of implies that you have more than one.e.g gaming pc for me, workstation for dad, family pc for mom
