ok, so here is the deal im buying my son a laptop for gaming and school *he graduates in 08*, currently his computer is really out-dated so i need to buy him a computer ASAP. Here is what i need advice on, what laptop should i buy him *like brand etc*, based on a few factors such as reliability-how good is support etc. Secondly im looking for a laptop that supports DX10, and the other factor is how upgradable is it-like from what i heard from alienware the GPU is fully upgradable so say he decides to upgrade in like 3 years to the latest GPU, and high end CPU.Please help me thanx:)please help me with future laptop purcha ...
I would recommend Dell, my first laptop was a Dell, and it still is today. So I would say that they are quite reliable. If you're looking for Gaming/Work (and money is not so much of a problem), then you should use the Inspiron series. A good one that I would recommend is the Inspiron E1705 which starts at $949 (check it out here: http://www.dell.com/content/products/productdetails.aspx/inspn_e1705?c=us%26l=en%26s=dhs%26cs=19). I'm not sure about upgrading the GPU, which you will have to check for yourself, but it has all the things you need for high performance such as Core Duo 2, a high end graphics card, Hypermemory and such things. I hope this helps! please help me with future laptop purcha ...
Dont get a dell. Just dont.
Laptops are bad for gaming also costly to upgade and buy. You cant even always upgrade. You will have to shell out bug bucks if you want a really great laptop.
He wants it for his son for college...and when you go to college it's usually best if you have a laptop, you can't carry around a pc....-.-
I know, but he is really gonna have to spend.
just to let u know im looking at like 3-4K budget:) so XPS maybe or is there better?
the current dx10 notebook options are just horrible from what i've heard (the batt. life is like 2 hours and performance wise the 7950 go series beats them and it's a dx9 series card) sooo yea i'd wait on a better solution, and i'm 99% sure that there is no way to ''upgrade'' a laptop's video card, i mean seriously... where would you put it? not to mention how incredibly expensive that'd be.....anway NOT A DELL just no, go with like voodoo or something like that... those are quality but pricey (3-4k for a decent one) um yea so case in point if he is graduating 08 maybe wait till 08....
just to let u know im looking at like 3-4K budget:) so XPS maybe or is there better?
Oh, in that case, lol, then yeah, I would go for the XPS. And what's wrong with Dell? The only other better brand I can think of is Sony, but their laptops are extremly expensive. Yeah, now that I think of it, I don't think you can upgrade the GPU on a laptop, all you can upgrade is the memory and HDD.If you have a 3k-4k budget, then you can prob get like alienware or voodoo, or XPS, those are specially designed for games, but like jamin said, you might want to wait till 08, you can probably get a better laptop for the same amount by then.

Ironicly, the current best DX10 laptop IMHO is a MacBook Pro running Vista or XP through bootcamp. It gets 3.5hrs+ battery life and has the 8600M GT.
hmm we will see, but lol i dunno how but alienware confirmed that its GPU's are upgradable....
well, its possible, buts its very hard, and it would require lots of money to upgrade your GPU, here is a disclaimer i found while browsing a site on upgrading the GPU on your own: DISCLAIMER: THIS PROCESS IS EXTREMELY DIFFICULT AND IS MEANT ONLY FOR ADVANCED USERS. EVEN THE SLIGHTEST MISTAKE MAY RESULT IN PERMANENT LAPTOP DAMAGE.
