Upgrade to XP or to SP1 in November. Before that, I wouldn't get Vista, lots of drivers don't work with Vista yet.

(I have 2 external hd drives, 2 gig ready boost and ALOT of programs.Video format converters, programs to mount images exc.)Not one.For Microsofts sake, if the SP1 doesn't basically fix everything they are going to get ripped apart in here. :P
Well, I landed a free copy of vista ultimate so I figured I would upgrade. And you XP purists will have to switch sometime, it's just a matter of now or later. Anyway, anyone have any ideas?
It's not so much that the people recommending XP are XP purists as much as they are working computer purists. The reason I don't recommend people upgrade to Vista yet is because it would suck if you installed Vista over your perfectly functional XP only to find that now half your hardware and software doesn'twork. And if it was an actual upgrade, now your XP key is void so you're screwed because you can't go back to XP. I dual boot into both and while Vista is pretty, it's a little slower (tho it can be fixed if you turn off all the bells and whistles, but then why upgrade if you're going to do that?) and it still has some very glaring issues. Driver support is still not where it should be. Nvidia's Vista driver is functional, but much of the features I use in XP are gone. The sound, particularly EAX is messed up. Vista also asks for your permission for EVERYTHING, which is incredibly annoying. So, for anyone considering upgrading, I'd hold off about a year unless you dual boot.
Well I am not going to argue for vista, it has it's ups and downs... and might I add u can disable UAC controls so vista doesnt always ask for permission. I think it is naive to dismiss vista unless you either (a) have less than 2GB RAM or (b) do not have driver support. The only real hit I notice is another 250MB of RAM taken up, with all the bells and whistles on. However, the most demanding games on memory take up 600-800MB at most. 2GB leaves plenty room for that and more. On that note, it does have some weird problems...

my x1950xt is awsome with vista...
I own XP Professional and Vista Home Premium and I am way more impressed with Vista. The built-in media center is awesome, and the interface is better and easier to use. I've also had no driver problems.
Yeah, I just got my usb problem fixed :)I personally like vista alot more. It does use more ram, but it performs alot better. Faster startup/shutdown, better interface, much better networking, etc. The only downside is I get 59 fps in BF2142 as opposed to 63 in xp XD.
