7950GT & E6420 or 7900GS & E6600 ...

I've hit a question in my computer building process that I can't decide on.Is it better to have a Core 2 Duo E6420 with the better gfx card Geforce 7950GT (256MB mind you, not 512MB version)Or better to have a Core 2 Duo E6600 with a Geforce 7900GS 256mb?I'm on a very tight budget and this is what it's come down to. The 7950 with the C2D 6420 still costs about $40 more than the other setup.I'm wanting to know which will be better overall, keeping in mind the 6420/7950GT cost $40-50 more, and the 7950 is the 256mb version and not the 512mb version I've seen a lot of. 7950GT %26amp; E6420 or 7900GS %26amp; E6600 ...
Since the 7950GT only has 256mb, it's full power may not be used, so I'd go with the 7900gs and E6600.7950GT %26amp; E6420 or 7900GS %26amp; E6600 ...
I'd personally go for the E6600 and 7900GS, but I'm not exactly a hardcore gamer. :PAnyways, maybe you could get a lower-end Core 2 Duo and overclock it..? Or if you can't OC and want the best gaming performance possible, go with the E6420 and 7950GT.
I would go with an E6420 and a x1950xt which is currently $179.99 at the egg (link below). The x1950xt is a faster performer than both the 7950gt 256 and 512 and may be cheaper than the 7950gt your looking at... just some things to considerEdit: btw, the x1950xt will blow a 7900gs out of the water... i forgot to add thatEdit2: forgot the link http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814102067
I'd go with the E6600 and the 7950GT, after some time you will only need to upgrade the video card.
if u can overclock get the e6420,, but if ur not overclocking still i would get the e6420, there really isnt much difference at all,,,
Yeah, with the price of the X1950XT at $180, $20 less than the 7950GT, and after having looked at that graphics card comparison chart I linked for you earlier, I'd actually say that that's your best option at this point. I usually recommend Nvidia cards, but at that price/performance point I have to suggest the 1950...

I just bought a x1950xt and it maxs out all my games :)
Alright thanks guys, you've been a lot of help.As it stands now, my new system will be:Core 2 Duo E66002GB 800MHz DDR2 ramRadeon X1950XTlooking for a good cheap hard driv, was going to use the DVD drive and hard drive i already have, but the new motherboard only has 1 IDE slot, so one of the drives will have to have an adaptor or just be a new SATA drive. My dvd drive is a new lightscribe drive, so that means I need a decent hard drive, nothing expensive or flashy, just somethin that will work with my system.
Also since my POS xbox 360 burned out, how do you think this new computer will compare to that? Still #%!%26@'s me off how many 360s are failing.

Good 160GB HDD for $60: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16822136062orDecent 120GB HDD for $50 (8MB Cache vs. 16MB): http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16822144414No matter the size you choose, you'll probably want 7200RPM, 3GBs/sec, and a 16MB Cache if you can. Western Digital and Seagate are both good HDD companies. Just go to Newegg and just use their browsing feature (not search) to narrow it down to a HDD you want with a price you want - I don't know how much exactly you want to spend...
I'd say 7950GT %26 E6420.

Going from 8MB of cache to 16MBs doesn't make a significant difference in performance.. Seagate's 7200.10 and Western Digital's SE16 hard drives are simply better due to Perpendicular Recording Technology (PRT).Cache is mainly used to temporarily store recently used data and a place to transfer data.

[/QUOTE]Alright, I'm sure you know what you're talking about better than I do.:)Also, just another suggestion for you, SaiToko: Before you finalize and buy, make one last thread with all of the parts of your final build plan (case, mobo, CPU, GPU, PSU, RAM, etc.) and let people look it over, since at this point you have it broken up between two threads.
I hadn't really planned on needing another hard drive, so as cheap or as close to $50 as possible is greatWhat's the official verdict, the 16mb cache drive, or the seagate 7200.10? i see one for about $50, seagate barracuda 7200.10 160GB, or one for $66 250GB version. As much as I hate pushing prices justthat little extra bit higher, I'm guessing the 250GB version for $16 more is the better deal, right? Oh and I forgot.... I've ordered there lots but never pay attention, does Newegg have the whole free ground shipping or bundled shipping deals with the prices, or is all this going to cost me a toooon in shipping?I remember computer cases used to be a pain to ship....May have to adjust some of my hardware if it's going to be a lot

I was about to say the same thing. Yeah it makes more sense to go with that setup.
